THIS YEAR

Technology plays a huge role in our daily lives, and it has proved to be imperative during the pandemic. It is undeniable that the world is advancing towards digitalisation where both artificial intelligence and machine learning allows for better accuracy at predicting outcomes. In response to this, AI4DP, a research excellence consortium comprising of IMU-MMU-UKM, designed the “HealthAI: Innovate for Health”, which will include a webinar and a research hackathon/workshop to expose participants to the latest technology trend of 2021.

Research Hackathon 2020 has provided a platform for us students to discover, express and pitch our innovative ideas on how we can contribute to the community. It was truly an unforgettable experience in having the opportunity to work together amongst my teammates and receiving guidance from our wonderful supervisor (Dr. Manisha) and ultimately, presenting our self-designed prototype in front of the experts. In short, you will never know the hidden talents and potential you have within until you step out from your comfort zone!

Research Hackathon 2020 has allowed me to explore and develop ideas I did not think I could have. Along with my wonderful team members, Raxshanaa and Shao Qin, we brainstormed and built our idea in hopes that our innovation can contribute to the community in this current pandemic. This experience has greatly helped in developing my innovative thinking and critical thinking. This opportunity has also given me the chance to learn more about pitching as well as to improve my presentation skills.

Raxshanaa A/P N.Mohgan, BPharm (Hons), IMU

Research Hackathon 2020 overall was a great initiative as it has allowed students to come up with innovative and impactful ideas. It has not only instilled inquisitive thinking but has been helpful with the ideation process. For me, it was an eye-opening experience and amidst the packed curriculum schedule, I have learned on managing time more efficiently and understood that having teammates and supervisors who support each other is essential as well.

BSc (Hons) in Psychology, IMU

My experience with the hackathon was interesting. From wanting to participate in a competition to wanting to change the world, my team and I held these dreams in our heads and weaved them into a reality. Although there were some ups and downs in this journey, I learnt a lot from them. My team and I brainstormed ideas, spent countless days finding online resources and sought guidance from our mentor, Mr Alex. Each and every one of these aspects turned the hackathon into a fruitful learning experience that I would not have gotten elsewhere.

BSc (Hons) in Psychology, IMU

Going in with zero expectations, witnessing what seemed like such a small seed of an idea blossoming into something way beyond was intrinsically rewarding for me. Through all the brainstorming sessions and extensive literature reviews in the process of crafting and moulding our app, this hackathon served as a good learning platform that enhanced my critical thinking skills and provided me with invaluable insights.

When I came across this brand-new event, I thought why not give it a try and see how far I can go. I experienced new ways of to carry our research and to develop our ideas. This gave me the confidence that my ideas are actually feasible. So, don’t be afraid to try something new as you might uncover your hidden skills!
